How Often Should You Get Tested?

Generally, you should get tested for HIV every three to six months if you:

  • Have had unprotected sex (vaginal, anal, or oral) with multiple or anonymous partners
Have had unprotected sex with a partner who did not know their own HIV status.

  • Share needles/syringes or other equipment for injecting drugs (including steroids),or have shared needles/syringes in the past

  • Have a history of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

Don’t fit into any of these categories? You should still consider getting an HIV test. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention recommends that all people between the ages of 13 and 64 be tested for HIV at least once as part of their routine health care.
